Why Oregon's License

Oregon is an open-carry state, so yes you are legally allowed to open carry in Oregon at the age of 18 or older. However, local governments can set their own regulations and laws for people carrying a loaded handgun without a concealed handgun license. With a license, you won’t need to worry about checking local laws before open carrying. Travel is made much easier within your state, as well as when crossing state lines. The Oregon concealed handgun license is honored by 22 other states making it great for those looking to carry in other states. After the course, all you need to do is go to your local sheriff’s office to submit your application and complete the process. Oregon is a “shall issue” state, meaning as long as you complete the class and meet the qualifications, your sheriff will issue you a license.

Common Questions

After completing my Oregon concealed handgun license class, what else is left to do?

This class is the only class required to get your Oregon Concealed Handgun License. Once you have completed the class you will receive a certificate that meets the requirements of Oregon Statute ORS 166.291 for obtaining a Concealed Handgun License. You will take that to your local sheriff's office. There, they will fingerprint you and help you submit your application. Some sheriffs' offices require you to make an appointment in advance; your instructor at your class will let you know about your specific county’s policies. You should receive your license within 45 days.

Can I obtain an Oregon non-resident concealed handgun license?

Oregon does issue non-resident permits, however, they will only issue them to residents of states that border Oregon. Those states include Washington, California, Idaho, and Nevada. A resident from these states can go to an Oregon sheriff to apply. Be aware that not all Oregon sheriffs participate in the non-resident permitting process. Before you drive to drop off your application in person, you should check the sheriff's website or call ahead

Can I apply for a different state’s permit to conceal carry in Oregon?

Oregon will not honor any licenses from concealed carry licenses from other states. The only way to conceal carry in Oregon is to have either a resident or non-resident license.
