Why the Oregon Concealed Handgun License?

Oregon is an open-carry state, and eligible adults may be able to open carry in many areas. However, local governments may have their own restrictions related to carrying a loaded handgun without an Oregon Concealed Handgun License. The Oregon Concealed Handgun License is the permit Oregon residents need to carry concealed in Oregon lawfully, and having this license can make carrying within your own state more straightforward while helping you avoid confusion when traveling throughout Oregon.

ASDI’s updated Oregon class also qualifies students to apply for the Utah Concealed Firearm Permit, a popular additional permit for responsible gun owners who want more options when traveling outside Oregon. By taking this course, students can complete training for both their Oregon Concealed Handgun License application and their Utah Concealed Firearm Permit application.

Common Questions

After completing my Oregon concealed handgun license class, what else is left to do?

This class is the only class required to get your Oregon Concealed Handgun License. Once you have completed the class you will receive a certificate that meets the requirements of Oregon Statute ORS 166.291 for obtaining a Concealed Handgun License. You will take that to your local sheriff's office. There, they will fingerprint you and help you submit your application. Some sheriffs' offices require you to make an appointment in advance; your instructor at your class will let you know about your specific county’s policies. You should receive your license within 45 days.

Can I obtain an Oregon non-resident concealed handgun license?

Oregon does issue non-resident permits; however, they will only issue them to residents of states that border Oregon. Those states include Washington, California, Idaho, and Nevada. A resident from these states can go to an Oregon sheriff to apply. Be aware that not all Oregon sheriffs participate in the non-resident permitting process. Before you drive to drop off your application in person, you should check the sheriff's website or call ahead.

Why would an Oregon student want the Utah Concealed Firearm Permit?

Many Oregon students choose to apply for the Utah Concealed Firearm Permit because it may provide additional concealed carry recognition in other states. This can be helpful for responsible gun owners who travel outside of Oregon and want to better understand their lawful carry options. Permit recognition can change, and every state has its own laws. Always check current state laws before carrying outside Oregon.
