All our North Carolina Concealed Carry classroom courses are designed to help students understand the legal requirements and responsibilities associated with obtaining a North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP). Classes are taught by experienced and knowledgeable USCCA-certified instructors. During the class, we focus on ensuring each student leaves feeling confident in their understanding of North Carolina’s concealed carry laws and self-defense laws. Our goal is not simply to help you complete a required class, but to ensure you leave with the knowledge and awareness needed to responsibly carry a concealed handgun. We will review real-world self-defense scenarios and discuss, step-by-step, what the law allows and what actions could create legal risk. This course is classroom-only and does not include a shooting component. At the end of the class, we will ensure that each student receives the required certificate of completion and guidance on where to get the live-fire component and the steps for applying for a North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit through their local county sheriff’s office, including application and fingerprinting requirements.

What should you expect?

As part of the course, we also focus on real-world considerations such as proper firearm storage, safety around children, and the legal responsibilities that come with carrying a concealed handgun.

Knowledgeable Instructors

All of our instructors are USCCA/NRA-certified and highly experienced in firearm safety and self-defense principles. They bring practical knowledge of responsible firearm ownership and concealed carry considerations. The training they provide will help give you the foundation and confidence to responsibly carry a firearm and understand the legal responsibilities that come with it.

Everyday Safety

Safety, both in the class and outside of it, is a top priority for all of our instructors. To ensure a safe learning environment, no live ammunition is permitted in the classroom. We are committed to promoting safe, responsible, and informed firearm ownership for every student.

Why North Carolina's Permit?

North Carolina allows open carry in many areas for anyone 18 years or older without a permit, but the only way to legally carry a handgun concealed is with a North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP). One of the main advantages of obtaining a permit is that a North Carolina CHP is recognized by many other states through reciprocity, making it easier to legally carry while traveling. After completing the required course and live-fire component, applicants must submit their Concealed Handgun Permit application to the sheriff’s office in their county of residence, where fingerprinting and a background check will be completed. North Carolina is a shall-issue state, meaning that as long as you meet the legal requirements and successfully complete the application process, the sheriff is required to issue the permit.

Common Questions

After completing the classroom portion, what is left to do?

After completing the classroom portion of the North Carolina concealed carry training, the remaining steps are to complete the live-fire shooting qualification with a certified instructor, obtain your certificate of completion, and then submit your Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) application to the sheriff’s office in your county of residence. During the application process, you will also submit fingerprints, provide valid identification, pay the required state and local fees, and undergo a background check before the permit can be issued.

What does the shooting portion require?

The shooting portion of the North Carolina concealed carry training typically requires students to demonstrate basic handgun proficiency by firing 30 rounds at a silhouette target, with 10 shots from 3 yards, 10 shots from 5 yards, and 10 shots from 7 yards. To pass, students must place a minimum number of hits on the target (commonly around 70% or about 21 out of 30 rounds) while also demonstrating safe firearm handling throughout the exercise.

Can I get a permit as a non-resident?

No, North Carolina does not issue concealed carry permits to non-residents. To obtain a North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP), you generally must be a resident of the state and apply through the sheriff’s office in your county of residence. However, North Carolina recognizes concealed carry permits issued by other states, so non-residents with a valid permit from their home state may legally carry concealed in North Carolina as long as they follow North Carolina’s firearm laws and restrictions.
