  • You must not have been involved in a juvenile delinquent act, which if committed by an adult, would be a felon.
  • You must not be acquitted from crime due to insanity reasons or being mentally impaired for at least five years before the application.
  • You must not be a legally incompetent person unless you have your rights restored at least five years before your application for Virginia concealed carry permit.
  • You must not be voluntarily or involuntarily admitted to a mental hospital. In the case of involuntary admission, you must have been discharged for more than five years before application.

What is the total cost of obtaining a Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit?

The cost of the ASDI Virginia concealed handgun permit course costs $55.00. The court will charge a fee of $10.00 for the processing of an application or issuing of a permit. Local law enforcement agencies may charge a fee not to exceed $35.00 to cover the cost of conducting an investigation. The State Police may charge a fee not to exceed $5.00 to cover the cost associated with processing the application. The total amount of the charges may not exceed $50.00, and payment may be made by any method accepted by the court. Additionally, the law enforcement agency may charge a separate fee for fingerprints that can range between $15-$30. The total cost of receiving your permit will range between $105-$140.

Does the Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit course include range time or a shooting qualification?

No, Virginia does not require any range time or shooting qualification to get a Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit. While the Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit course does not include range time we highly recommend all students obtain additional live-fire training from us or another qualified instructor.

After completing my Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit course, what else is left to do to obtain my permit??

After completing your Virginia concealed handgun permit course you will apply for the permit through your local Circuit Court. The application process can vary by the court so you will need to contact the Circuit Court in your county for specific instructions on how to proceed with the process. You will need to bring a set of fingerprints with you to the court, these can be completed by any law enforcement agency. 

Can I obtain a Virginia non-resident permit?

Non-residents of Virginia who are 21 or older may apply for a Virginia Non-Resident Concealed Handgun Permit. A non-resident must take an in-person but the class does not necessarily need to be located in Virginia. All ASDI concealed carry courses meet the requirements for a Virginia Non-resident permit. The Virginia non-resident permit is a great permit to have for anyone who travels and wants to be able to legally conceal their firearm. Non-residents may apply in writing to the Virginia state police.
