Classes include detailed discussions of real-life self-defense scenarios, outlining what to do—and what to avoid—in high-stress situations. Students also benefit from hands-on instruction and live-fire training at The Liberty Firearms Institute. Upon completion, participants will receive the necessary certificate and clear guidance on submitting their application through their local sheriff’s office.

What should you expect?

Practical Training

In Makhaira Group’s class, students will learn proper firearm handling, weapon safety, and firearms laws through hands-on instruction and real-world application. Every course also emphasizes practical, everyday scenarios—including secure firearm storage, safety around children, and the essentials of carrying concealed.

Knowledgeable Instructors

All Makhaira Group instructors are Colorado Verified and certified by the United States Concealed Carry Association. Each brings extensive knowledge in self-defense, both in the home and in public settings. Their instruction provides the foundation to confidently and responsibly carry your firearm wherever you go.

Everyday Safety

Safety is a top priority for all Makhaira Group instructors, both in the classroom and beyond. To maintain a secure learning environment, no live ammunition is allowed in the classroom; however, it will be used appropriately during the live-fire portion on the range. Makhaira Group is committed to making firearm ownership both safe and enjoyable for every student.

Why Colorado's Permit

If you're a Colorado resident, the Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) is the only legal way to carry a concealed firearm in the state. In addition, the Colorado permit is recognized in 35 other states, making it one of the most widely accepted permits available. This course fulfills the only training requirement needed to apply. Once you’ve completed both the classroom instruction and the live-fire exercise, the final step is to visit your local sheriff’s office to submit your application. Colorado is a “shall issue” state, meaning that as long as you meet the qualifications and complete the required training, the sheriff is obligated to issue your permit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this class meet the new law's standards?

Yes, this course fully complies with Colorado House Bill 24-1174, enacted in 2024. All new requirements, effective July 1, 2025, are carefully integrated to ensure students are well-prepared before applying for their concealed carry permits at their local sheriff’s office. The program includes eight hours of in-person instruction, live-fire training at the Liberty Firearms Institute, and both written and practical competency exams. All training is conducted by Colorado Verified Instructors certified through a county sheriff’s office.

What do I need to do after the class to get my permit?

This class fulfills the only training requirement needed to obtain your Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit. After completing the course, you’ll receive a certificate that fully meets the standards outlined in Colorado HB24-1174. This certificate remains valid for one year from the date of your class. To apply, simply take the certificate to your local sheriff's office, where they will take your photo, collect fingerprints, and assist with the application process. Some counties may require an appointment, and your instructor will provide guidance on your specific county’s procedures. Once processed, your permit will arrive by mail.

What do I need to bring with me to the class?

For the classroom portion of the training, all you need to bring is a valid Colorado state ID or driver’s license. The live-fire portion takes place on site at the Liberty Firearms Institute indoor shooting range. Students may bring their own firearm and at least 50 rounds of ammunition. If you don’t own a firearm, rentals will be available at the range on the day of training for an additional fee. You may also purchase ammunition at the range on the day of the class. If you are renting a firearm, you must purchase ammunition from the range.

Can I just take the renewal class, or do I need the new full 8-hour class?

You are eligible to take the 2 ½ hour Renewal Class if you currently hold a valid Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP), or if your permit has expired within the last 6 months. However, if your permit has expired for more than 6 months—or if you have never had a Colorado CHP—you are required to take the full 8-hour concealed carry class. This course meets all the updated training standards outlined in Colorado House Bill 24-1174, including classroom instruction, written and live-fire proficiency exams, and legal education. It’s important to note that both the full and renewal classes include the same live-fire qualification at the range, so you’ll need to be prepared for that portion regardless of which class you take.
