Why a New Mexico Permit?

The New Mexico Concealed Handgun License (CCW) is a valuable permit for responsible firearm owners. It allows qualified individuals to lawfully carry a concealed handgun within the state of New Mexico and may be recognized by other states through reciprocity agreements. To qualify, applicants must complete a state-approved firearms training course that covers safe handling, legal responsibilities, and includes a live-fire shooting qualification. As active duty or if you left the military in the last 20 years, the state waives the traditional class and shooting requirement.  Application fees and license terms are set by the state, and licenses must be renewed periodically in accordance with New Mexico law. New Mexico also provides a process for eligible non-residents, including active-duty military members stationed in the state, to obtain a license if they meet the required qualifications and complete approved training.

Common Questions

What Training in required for the New Mexico CCW?

If you are currently on active duty in the U.S. military or you are a veteran/retiree who was honorably discharged within the last 20 years, you are exempt from the standard firearms training requirement that most applicants must complete for a New Mexico Concealed Handgun License (CCW). That means you do not have to take an expensive CCW training course or live-fire qualification to meet the training requirement when applying for your license under the military exemption.

Why should I get the New Mexico Permit?

Even though Active Duty military and those who separated within the last 20 years may be exempt from New Mexico’s standard training requirement, taking a concealed carry class still offers significant benefits. New Mexico has unique laws on use-of-force and deadly force statutes. Rules of engagement in the military differ greatly from civilian self-defense law. A class helps bridge that gap.

What do I need to bring with me to the class? Should I bring a firearm?

For the classroom portion, please bring a valid New Mexico state ID card or driver’s license. This course is classroom-only and does not include a live-fire or shooting qualification. No firearms or ammunition are permitted in the classroom. All required instruction will be completed in a safe, structured learning environment focused on legal responsibilities, firearm safety principles, and concealed carry considerations.
