In the class, we will strive to ensure that each student leaves feeling comfortable with their knowledge of Idaho concealed carry laws and self-defense laws. Our goal is not to just help you check off the class needed to apply for your permit; we want you to leave with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to go out and conceal carry responsibly. We will discuss self-defense scenarios and go through point by point what to do and what not to do. Finally, we will ensure everyone leaves with the correctly completed paperwork and the required certificate of completion. Idaho ECWL application fees, fingerprinting, and background check requirements are processed through your local county sheriff’s office and may vary by county.

Why Idaho's Enhanced Permit?

Idaho is what many call a “Constitutional Carry” state, which means you are not required to have a concealed weapons license to carry a concealed handgun in Idaho as long as you are legally allowed to possess a firearm. However, constitutional carry generally stops at the state border. If you want to carry in many other states, you will need a concealed carry permit or license honored by that state. Fortunately, Idaho’s Enhanced Concealed Weapons License (ECWL), issued under Idaho Code § 18-3302K, offers broader reciprocity than Idaho’s standard license and is recognized by 39 states. This class is the required training needed to apply for your Idaho ECWL. After the course, all you need to do is submit your application, certificate of completion, fingerprints, and required fees through your local county sheriff’s office. Idaho is a “shall issue” state, meaning that as long as you complete the required training, meet the legal qualifications, and pass the required background check, your license will generally be issued.

Common Questions

Why should I get an Idaho Enhanced CWL if Idaho is a Constitutional Carry state?

Idaho does not require a concealed weapons license for eligible adults who can legally possess a firearm, but the Idaho Enhanced Concealed Weapons License gives you added benefits. The biggest reason to get the Enhanced CWL is reciprocity, because Idaho law directs the Attorney General to seek recognition of the enhanced license in other states. This makes it valuable for anyone who travels outside Idaho and wants broader concealed carry recognition.

What are the requirements to get an Idaho Enhanced CWL?

To qualify for an Idaho Enhanced CWL under Idaho Code § 18-3302K, you generally must be over 21, meet Idaho’s legal eligibility requirements, and complete a qualifying handgun course within the 12 months before applying. The enhanced course must include the required training under Idaho law, and sheriff’s offices commonly describe it as an 8-hour course with live-fire qualification.

What do I need to do after the Idaho Enhanced CWL class?

After completing the class, you will receive the certificate of completion needed for your application. You then submit your application, certificate, fingerprints, and required fees through your local county sheriff’s office. Some counties specify that the training certificate must show 8 hours of classroom instruction and a minimum of 98 live-fire rounds, and the training must be completed within 12 months before applying.
